About The Alaska Squid Company, Inc.

The Alaska Squid Company, Inc., based in Juneau, Alaska, is pioneering the development of Alaska’s first commercial fishery for Magister squid (Berryteuthis magister). The company was founded by Richard Yamada, who brings more than 40 years of experience as a charter captain in Southeast Alaska and more than 20 years of leadership in fisheries management at the local, state, federal, and international levels. He currently serves as a U.S. Commissioner on the International Pacific Halibut Commission.

Our organization is dedicated to advancing the policy framework for a new, sustainable Magister squid fishery and demonstrating its potential economic value to Alaska’s seafood sector. We are committed to quality, innovation, and operational leadership across advanced harvesting methods, logistics, and the development of premium food and pharmaceutical products. A central part of our mission is to equip local fishermen with the knowledge, tools, and logistical support needed to enter this emerging fishery. We also support the regional seafood industry by helping local processing plants build the capabilities required to handle this underutilized, high-value species.
